Sometimes we’re not comfortable with a piece. It seems out of control or outside the lines, but it’s an essential part of who we are becoming and where we are going. Read Full article

Janet Stanley Paints like a Dancer! R.M. Vaughan

Writer, Poet & Video Artist, Globe & Mail

Globe & Mail Review, August 21, 2010, R.M. Vaughan Review, Solo Exhibition, Pure Potential, *new* Gallery, 906 Queen West, TO 1

Janet Stanley paints like a dancer (and maybe she dances like a painter but I’ve never seen her dance). Her spiralling, jumping, thick-as-cake oils resemble a happy meeting between melted candy, sea-foam-coloured taffeta, and a three-legged blender.

“I like a canvas to breathe and be alive. Be alive is the point. And, as the limitations are something called pigment and canvas, let’s see if I can do it.” Lee Krasner

I thought of Krasner’s “roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-on-with-it” remark when I saw Janet Stanley’s new paintings. Read the Foreward

Country Routes, March 2001, Janet Stanley & the Flaming Spirit Artist’s Collective Exhibit.

First Showing, Flaming Spirit Artist’s Collective

Shortly after leaving the corporate marketing world, and after reading Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way”, I was inspired to experiment with painting in a variety of mediums.  At the same time, I was fortunate to meet with a group of painters we eventually named The Flaming Spirit Artists. Our first shows were held in our weekly painting studio at M. M. Woodcraft where I was delighted to sell my first painting, Tulip Tales.

Country Routes, December 1999, Canada’s Yukon Inspires Artists from Orangeville and Area, Story by Janet Stanley

There are strange works done, on a Canoe North run,

By the souls who dare wield a brush.

Their pallets are crowned and the colours abound,

In a whole new kind of “Gold Rush”.

With markers for paddles, their sketchbooks they straddle,

Adrift in their seats in the wild.

They stare and the gaze in a glorious haze,

As the Yukon bewitches its child.

Excerpt from “The Creation of Art Yukon” by Janet Stanley with all due respect to Robert Service4

Giving Back

donation

Giving and sharing are the foundation of my practice and I'm delighted to be able to support organizations like the Unstoppable Foundation which strives to ensure every child has access to education.  Over the years I have donated works of art in support of several hospitals, survivor groups, environmental and gallery fundraisers like the MacDonald Stewart Art Gallery now known as The Art Gallery of Guelph.
